HHA INTRODUCES THE 2009 MIDNIGHT BASKETBALL LEAGUE
HUNTSVILLE – The Huntsville Housing Authority (HHA) introduces their 2009 Midnight Basketball League (MBL) designed for inner city young adults to begin June 9, 2009. From playing to watching the game of basketball, if you’re looking for intense competitive action on or off the court, MBL might be the answer.
MBL is a league, which is run and lead by young adults ages 18 to 25. This year HHA will be opening up the program to high school students. MBL provides an opportunity for young adults to play competitive basketball with their peers in a safe and inviting atmosphere for a six week period.
The program offers a way for participants to display their talents through competitive instruction filled basketball settings. MBL also allows law enforcement and community officials the opportunity to develop positive relationships with these young adults.
“This is a community league that embraces young adults that have been written off by much of society. What’s great about this program is that not only does it provide a positive and safe environment for at least six to eight hours a week, but it offers a way for these young people to further their education. In order to participate in our MBL program you must enroll in a GED class offered by one of the service providers in our network. It’s also a great way to bring players together to get to know each other and have a good time and maybe, make lifetime friendships,” said Tony McGinnis, Huntsville Housing Authority, Youth Services Coordinator.
More than 50 young adults participated in the program in 2008, and it gained the attention of about 100 spectators each night. For more information about the Huntsville Housing Authority, Youth Services call 256.539.0774 or visit us online at www.huntsvillehousing.org.
