HUNTSVILLE HOUSING AUTHORITY ADDRESSES SOUTH HUNTSVILLE CONCERNS

HUNTSVILLE
- The Huntsville Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, Executive Director/CEO, and staff have issued a statement regarding inflammatory comments made at last week’s South Huntsville Civic Association meeting.

“We are saddened by inaccurate and false comments made at last week’s South Huntsville Civic Association meeting concerning an increase in crime at HHA owned properties on Benaroya Lane and Mahogany Row.

Let us be very clear, according to the Huntsville Police Department there has been no increase in crime by our residents since these properties were purchased and occupied earlier this year. This has been due to a strong management presence at each of our communities and to the residents which are law-abiding citizens working to improve their quality of life.

We also want to comment on rumors about children that live in our properties causing a decline in test scores in South Huntsville schools. Those comments are both false and hurtful to our children who have only been in school for three months. We call on the citizens of South Huntsville to research the facts before making public statements that are creating an atmosphere of misunderstanding and hate.

Providing safe and affordable housing options for its citizens has been a stated goal of this nation’s government for over 70 years. The Huntsville Housing Authority will continue to work to meet this goal for the residents of the city of Huntsville and in doing so we are committed to being good neighbors.”
