Working
with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, the Huntsville Housing
Authority’s Cultural Arts Conservatory has provided a six-week
music residency to the Terry Heights Elementary School since 2000.
In 2003, this program will also be provided to the Lincoln Elementary
School. The residency project provides direct classroom education
to the children in kindergarten, first, and second grades. The
residency also provides open rehearsals and performances by symphony
musicians for the entire student body during the residency period.

This project provides the children with age-appropriate music
instruction that addresses the Alabama Course of Study for the
Arts in music for their grade levels. The Authority has developed
this program to ensure that the children attending elementary
schools with a high proportion of Authority-resident children
have access to the benefits of consistent and continuing music
instruction. It should be noted that many of the children who
participate in this program in their school also participate in
the Conservatory’s continuing violin lessons, or participated
in the Conservatory’s preschool music program. Our intent
is to ensure that children have multiple opportunities to engage
themselves in this area of study, as well as to provide experiences,
education, and exposure throughout their early development.
