Public Housing

What is Public Housing?

Low-income public housing provides to eligible persons affordable, safe, decent, and sanitary housing. Public housing attempts to insure a social and economical mix of low-income residents in order to foster social stability and upward mobility. Eligibility requirements are determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the rent of eligible residents is based upon adjusted gross income.

When and where may I apply?

Public housing applications are taken Monday through Friday from 8:00-11:00 a.m., and from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Applications are not accepted by mail or telephone and a personal interview is required. Interested persons may obtain an application at the Administrative Office located at 200 Washington Street (NE corner of Washington Street and Holmes Avenue).

Who may apply?

• Low-income families as determined by HUD

• Persons at least 19 years old or 18 years old and married

• Persons living in substandard housing or homeless

• Persons who are involuntarily displaced

Documents you should bring with you:

• Birth certificate for each family member

• Social security card for each family member

• Marriage certificate or divorce decree, if applicable

• Photo I.D., e.g., driver's license, military I.D., or school I.D.

Rent/Security Deposit

The amount of rent is based on the total household income and is determined at the time of eligibility. A $100 security deposit is required when the lease is signed.
