People to People Donation for Travion Ragland from Wendy Reeves on Vimeo.

The Huntsville Housing Authority helps local teen, Travion Ragland, see the world. Executive Director Michael Lundy authorized a contribution to the prestigious People to People Student Ambassador Program on Ragland’s behalf. The program was founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to bridge cultural and political borders through education and exchange. Ragland raised more than half of the tuition costs on his own for the 20-day summer trip to Europe. He will earn high school and college credits by participating in the program. Lundy, who was out-of-town on business, asked Commissioner Dorothy Ford, also a scout leader, to help notify Ragland about the donation. During a brief visit to Lee High School on Wednesday, Ford presented Ragland a letter from Lundy informing him about the donation.
Anyone interested in helping Ragland raise funds for the trip may send a check or money order by April 15, 2011, made out to People to People Student Ambassador Program. In the Memo field include: Travion Ragland, Delegate # 10118234. Send it People to People Student Ambassador Program Admissions Office, P.O. Box 34902, Seattle, WA 98124

7.14.11-What’s next at the Councill Courts site?
A redevelopment plan is emerging and plans are underway for demolition of the apartment buildings, known as Councill Courts.
On Wednesday, the Huntsville Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the sale of 5.58 acres at the site for $3.67 million to Bristol Development Group. The property is located between Gallatin Street and the western boundary of the site, between St. Clair Avenue and Pelham Street.
The sale is contingent on a new mixed use zoning classification, a binding commitment for the construction of a supermarket, and agreements from the City of Huntsville for streets and to build a parking garage.
Additionally, memorials are planned for the site to honor Dr. William H. Councill, the founder of Alabama A&M University and namesake of the site, and Dr. Sonnie Hereford, Huntsville civil rights pioneer.
If approved, the developer, Bristol Development Group/PGM Properties, plans to build at least 180 apartments and create 60,000 square feet of commercial and retail space at the site, located across the street from Gateway Place, a new senior residential community.
In March, the board approved a sales contract with National Bank of Commerce for 2.27 acres at the site for $2,175,386.40. The property is at the corner of Gallatin Street and St. Clair Avenue.
