How do you end poverty?

You start trying. The Huntsville Housing Authority and newly created Village of Promise are sponsoring a series of events in September to launch a new initiative geared toward helping people help themselves into a better way of life. The events are designed to empower parents with knowledge about how to help children with their education. The events culminate with a screening of, ”Waiting for Superman,” a documentary film which analyzes the failures of public education. The film follows several students through the educational system, who hope to be selected in a lottery for acceptance into charter schools.

The film's title is based on an interview with Geoffrey Canada, who recounts how during his childhood his mother told him that Superman was not real. He says it frightened him because the way he saw it, there was nobody to save him.

Canada, who grew up and founded the Harlem Children’s Zone in New York City, will be the featured speaker at a luncheon, following the screening at the Von Braun Center. The Village of Promise is based on Canada’s program in Harlem, geared toward creating better educational environments for all children.
