The primary mandate of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is to ensure that public housing authorities provide decent, safe, and quality affordable housing for low-income families. Moreover, it is my vision, which is consistent with the Huntsville Housing Authority’s mission, to move beyond the fundamental mandate of HUD and identify and create upward mobility opportunities that will lead to self-determination and self-realization for our housing customers.
In my vision to transform public housing as we know it, we must implement a comprehensive, strategy which includes, but is not limited to, the following:
(a) Promote economic independence through education, technical, and job-skill training
(b) Provide integrated case management services, which connect families to supportive services that lead to self-sufficiency
(c) Nurture and strengthen the family structure
(d) Design affordable housing with a focus on deconcentration of poverty through mixed-income and mixed-use strategies
(e) Collaborate to advance business opportunities and work force development
(f) Partner with local, state, and federal entities to promote and foster homeownership opportunities as a wealth-building tool
It is imperative that we transform public housing into a product which is consistent with vibrant and healthy communities. It is our intent to continue to partner with a wide range of entities to provide holistic and quality housing services that can be utilized as stepping stones to economic independence and social uplift.
